Questions about the halving

What is the Bitcoin halving?

Every 210,000 blocks, the number of new bitcoins paid to miners for each block is cut in half. It is written into Bitcoin's code and happens automatically, with no company or person deciding it.

When is the next Bitcoin halving?

The next halving happens at block 1,050,000. At the current pace of about 9.5 minutes per block, that is estimated for 13 March 2028. The date moves a little as blocks come in faster or slower.

How is the date estimated?

The countdown takes the blocks still to be mined and multiplies them by the average time between blocks over the last 2,016 blocks (about two weeks). Bitcoin aims for 10 minutes per block, but real block times vary.

What happens to the block reward?

The reward drops from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC per block, so new supply falls from about 450.0 to 225.0 BTC per day.

Why does the halving matter?

It slows the creation of new bitcoins until the 21 million limit is reached, expected around the year 2140. Miners earn less per block afterwards, and past halvings have drawn a lot of market attention. Past price moves are no guarantee of future ones.

How many halvings will there be?

About 33 in total. After that the block reward rounds down to zero and miners are paid only through transaction fees.
