What is the CPI?
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures how fast prices paid by US consumers are rising. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes it once a month, with the headline rate (all items) and "core" CPI, which leaves out food and energy. Traders compare both with the forecast and with the month before.
Why crypto watches it
Inflation decides what the Fed does next. A hotter-than-expected CPI makes rate cuts less likely and often lifts the dollar, which tends to weigh on Bitcoin and other crypto. A cooler reading does the opposite. Prices can move sharply in the first minutes after 8:30 AM New York time.
